A Blog about Tartan

February is an unusual month to start anything, but when going about the process of opening a new shop on Shopify, blogging wasn't our first priority and yet it is a cathartic opportunity to talk about what we are doing and sharing our love for Tartan.
First, by way of defining Tartan, "A tartan is a design which is capable of being woven consisting of two or more alternating colored stripes which combine vertically and horizontally to form a repeated chequered pattern." This definition is according to the Scottish Registry of Tartans and as codified by the Scottish Register of Tartans Act (2008). A few other terms should be explained. The 'sett' of the Tartan is this pattern design. The design is made up of 'warps' and 'wefts'. The warps are the vertical stripes and the wefts are the horizontal. When like colored warps and wefts meet a solid colored square is formed. When different colors cross it is known as a 'half-tone'.
There are 1000s of Tartan designs of breathtaking beauty, here at the Tartan Haberdashery we have curated a selection of affordable tartan ribbon to enhance the decor in your home! Each month we will feature a Tartan of the Month to highlight.
